Acupuncture

Looking for a natural way to ease pain, improve sleep, or bring your body back into balance?

Our Cromwell-based acupuncture team offers evidence-based treatments tailored to your body and lifestyle. Working closely with our physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, and osteopaths, we ensure your care is truly integrated — and truly yours.

Acupuncture is a gentle, effective therapy that supports the body’s natural healing process.
It involves the use of ultra-fine needles inserted at specific points to reduce pain, ease tension, and rebalance your system. Many people find it so relaxing that they drift off to sleep during treatment — feeling warmth, tingling or heaviness, but always calm and restored.

Acupuncture originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine, one of the oldest systems of healing in the world. This holistic approach aims to restore balance in your mental, emotional and physical health — addressing the body as a whole, not just symptoms.

At Cromwell Health, acupuncture can be a standalone treatment or work alongside chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage and osteopathy for truly integrated care.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends acupuncture for:

  • Musculo-skeletal injuries
  • Hay fever
  • Depression
  • Post-operative pain
  • Abdominal pain (gastritis and peptic ulcers)
  • Arthritis
  • Hypertension
  • Low back pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Post-stroke recovery
  • Gynaecological and obstetric disorders (Dysmenorrhea, morning sickness)

Needles

Insertion of needles at certain acupuncture points on various parts of the body. Acupuncture needles are hair-fine and unlike syringes there is no cutting edge or hollow shaft. The main sensation experienced is usually numbness, heaviness, warmth or tingling. Many patients find acupuncture treatments very soothing and fall asleep.

Moxibustion:

Heat therapy by the burning of the Chinese Herb Ai Hao (Artemisia Vulgaris) close to or actually on the inserted needle to warm the patient long-term from the inside.
The heat is able to penetrate deeply into the muscles and essentially strengthens the actions of the needles. By drawing more “qi” and blood into the area, Moxa can greatly aid the healing process. It is the burning of Moxa which gives many acupuncture clinics their characteristic aroma!

Cupping:

Creating a vacuum in a cup to lift the skin in order to massage the muscle deeply and remove any tension or discomfort.
Cups frequently will leave circular bruises on the skin but these will not be painful and will clear after a few days.

Chinese massage:

Chinese massage focuses on channels or energy points that will effectively transport and guide blood and energy, or “qi,” throughout the body. The aim is to relieve aches and pain and to achieve balance to protect the person against different types of infection and maintain the optimum function of all organs. When the channels are impeded or blocked, the person experiences pain and is prone to health problems.
