Pilates
has developed as a system to primarily activate and strengthen the
core muscles of the body. These core muscles are a group of postural
muscles which effectively act as a natural back brace during movements
and day to day activities. The core muscles are commonly weakened
as a result of injury or postural problems leading to instability
of the spine and pelvis, a common underlying factor in low back
pain and other musculoskeletal conditions or injuries.

Clinical
Pilates is becoming more popular amongst both sporting and performing
arts communities to assist in rehabilitation as well as improving
fitness and performance. Elite sporting teams regularly include
pilates training in the programs, recognising the importance of
a strong core to the body's optimum function.
Practitioners
at Queenstown Health have training in pilates and have specialised
equipment in the clinic gym for pilates training. Pilates techniques
can be integrated into your rehabilitation as part of ACC treatments.
